History
The Watergraafsmeer was once a lake, a former inland sea of the Zuiderzee. The ring canal and dikes still remind us of the reclamation. Pleasure grounds, farms and dwellings were built.
After 1920 it became one of Amsterdam's boroughs. There are many inspiring elements such as water, dikes and historical monuments including Frankendael and De Vergulden Eenhoorn. There have also been many structural developments in the past century, right up to the Oostpoort project on the Valentijnkade.
In the Watergraafsmeer, in which the Oostpoort area lies, you will notice the abundance of space and as you come from the city centre you will see the first low-rise buildings. The Watergraafsmeer has large green spaces and there are several magnificent churches and even a country estate. It is the ideal place for families and active professionals. There is a good range of schools and plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities. There is a football club and the Jaap Edenhal ice rink is close by. But there is more to the Watergraafsmeer! You will find exceptional building styles, for example in Betondorp and there is a bustling art and culture scene.
